How many ounces of A/C oil requires an empty Freon 12 system? How about a 134A system? (Automobile A/C)?

on an empty automobile air conditioning, how many ounces of A/C oil is reguired for a freon 12 system? How about a 134A system?

Be aware that freon 12 and 134 carry different kinds of referigeration oil! And they mix with wrong freon with disasterous results!

The oil flows with the freon to lubricate the internal parts of the compressor. A reasonably larger amount will not hurt anything, - however it will take up a small amount of space that would be filled with freon (which hurts nothing, but makes amount of coolant to charge - different than specified in repair manual)

If you are just recharging a system you do not need a whole lot of oil to add. If you are changing a compressor, - it may be precharged with oil, - or it may not,- find out from supplier, - also it will specify in information with conmpressor how much you should use!

A good rule of thumb if you are just adding use a small charge can (avail from parts stores-or Wal-Mart) which has about 4 oz in it. I filling a rebuilt or new one you need 8 oz or more - usually a "charge can" is available at parts supplier that you can buy at same time, and eliminate worries about amount!
Reply:the oil used is different! if you add too much it can destroy your compressor. be careful, don't guess Report It

Reply:It depends solely on the vehicle, an 88 chev truck that holds 2lbs of12 if the system has been 100 percent flushed out requires 14oz of oil. you use the same amount of oil but 20 percent less freon when converting Pag 150 is the best oil for 134 systems
Reply:depends on the car and system capacity for refrigerant. more refrigerant=more oil. usually there is a sticker under the hood that tells you refrigerant capacity and sometimes oil capacity. If it doesn't, you'll need to get a shop manual for that car to tell you.
Reply:on 134 its added in with the freon,,most of the time,,this makes it easier to service,on the old r-12,,it was 3-6 ounces,it always tells you on the air sticker,,under the hood,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.
Reply:Depends on the airr system in the car and the cooling capacity of the system for example a van with rear air is a much larger system than say a honda civic each and every car i have ever worked on is differnt
