What kind of solvent can I use to flush a car's a/c system? Can I use paint thinner or have to get a flush?

If you do not have the proper recovery equipment, it is against the law to service a/c on your car and the penalties are huge! Even flush is supposed to be recovered. Make sure you have the proper equipment first. It depends on what kind of system, it is R-12 or HFC-134A.

You don't want to use paint thinner it might swell up the seals and orings within the system. They make a A/C flush that usually runs about $20-$30 a quart. U can find this at a carquest auto parts store. I don't know your particular situation but since the system is open its a good idea to replace the receiver/drier and orifice valve/expansion valve.
Reply:It takes special equipment to evacuate the system of refrigerant then recharge it after the service/repairs are needed. It also takes a special tool to perform the flush and a special flush chemical other wise damage can occur.
Reply:NO!!! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN/FLUSH YOUR CAR AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM!! the system is under pressure ans opening the system will vent the chemicals to atmosphere, which will render the system unusable until recharged, and is ILLEGAL! the chemicals must be recaptured by a special machine that only the repair shop has..... if released the chemicals in the air conditioner system severely deplete the ozone and thus it is illegal to vent them... you must get a flush on your air conditioner if it doesn't work properly...
Reply:Do not use paint thinner! You shouldn't need to flush an AC system unless some contamination has occurred. Be careful opening the system or you can contaminate it if it isn't already. AC systems are tricky. There are different chemicals that are OK to use depending on what kind of refrigerant is used. (R134a or R12) Also after determining the refrigerant, you have to determine which oil has been used. If a system has been contaminated, a simple flush will probably not be enough to solve the problem. You may want to consult your mechanic.
