Where did the grading system "A, B, C, D, F" come from?

Why is "E" skipped?

Do the letters stand for anything?

Where did the grading system "A, B, C, D, F" come from?
In some places, the letter 'E' is used as the failing grade. 'F' is used interchangeably because it is the first letter in the word 'Fail'.
Reply:It used to be E, but people decided F was better because "fail" starts with F.
Reply:A-awesome

B-boring

C-careless

D-dreadful

F-FAIL!!!

hope this helps.
Reply:When the system started there were all the letters from A-F including E. So after graduation, all the A, B, C, and D kids went on to live productive lives. And the F kids went to live in stupid homes. But then there were these E kids. They weren't smart enought to live productive lives, but they weren't dumb enough to live in the stupid homes, so they died. Thats why there is no E in the grading system.
