Windows could not start following file is missing or corrupt c:\windows\system32\config\sys...

received this error on trying to boot windows

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: c:\windows\system32\config\system

I tried last known config. did not work, got into recovery console however cannot change directory to windows it says there is no cd or floppy disk in the drive, when I try running chkdsk it says this drive has one or more unrecoverable errors, I ran disk tests on it and all tests passed saying the harddrive is okay, I tried creating a tmp directory but it says access is denied....I'm an entry level computer tech but cant seem to find a way around this problem without formatting, any help would be awesome....

if your system 32 is messed up then get an xp disc and boot to the disc, it should give an option i think to repair or reformat
